Explaining The LangaList/Langa.Com:
What it is, What the Ad Options Are, Etc.

1) What is the
LangaList/Langa.Com? The LangaList is a free,
fast-growing, twice-weekly, 100% opt-in email newsletter independently owned and
published by computer author, editor, analyst and consultant Fred Langa. The web
home of the LangaList is Langa.Com (the web site you are now visiting; which
also includes BrowserTune,
a portion of Langa.Com with a separate entry point and URL). There are
advertising opportunities on both the web sites and in the email newsletter.
The LangaList newsletter is described as: a free, easy and
automatic way to get more from your hardware, software, and time online. It's
all 100% original---no reprints or warmed-over text--- and offers hot new tips,
tricks and bugfixes for working with Windows hardware and software, and
information on Fred Langa's BrowserTune (the web's best free browser
tune-up/test tool), HotSpots (a great web new site, every day), online columns
and chats, and much, much more.
You may know the author, Fred Langa, from his previous work
as VP/Editorial Director at WINDOWS Magazine, or as Editor in Chief of Byte
Magazine, or from various appearances at trade shows and on TV and radio. (More
info on Fred)

2) Is it any good? Well, it was named one
of the world's top 5 ezines by the eZines database; it's one of the top 10
most-frequently-recommended computer ezines tracked by the Recommend-It service;
and the subscriber base has grown steadily since the
newsletter began publication in 1997.

3) OK,
the readers love it. What about advertisers? Consider
the words of some LangaList advertisers. First, Bob Bales of SaferSite
(makers of PestPatrol):
Thanks for all your help! Your newsletter is
the best performing advertising we've experienced to date.
Or Doug Taylor (CrossTec Corp):
Feel free to use me as a reference -- you are
doing a fantastic job. When your newsletter hits -- we know it. CrossTec's
ads in the Langa Report continue to generate clicks and more important - sales.
Your readers are a sharp bunch...I pride myself and finding your quality email
newsletter and having the foresight to sign up for a 12x run from the start. It
was one of our first sponsorships and has generated many leads for NetOp....
Keep up the good work.
Or Mark Ward (EsupplementsPlus):
I thought using your newsletter would be the way to
promote our product. I get quite a few newsletters but most I just scan to see
if there is anything interesting. With yours I read from top to bottom because
of the interesting and informative information. I'm happy to say right now
orders are coming in faster than we can print them and I'm sure this early most
people have not even seen it yet. If you ever need a testimonial you can have
them e-mail me anytime. I couldn't be happier with the results.
Or consider what software publisher Kan Yabumoto
(Xxcopy) said:
I'm totally amazed the power of your newsletter. Just a
small [mention] in your page would cause the traffic of our web page to go four
times to its normal volume.
But the very best testimonials are the actions the many, many
repeat advertisers in the LangaList: Just check out
past issues--- you'll see that many
advertisers come back again and again and again. This high level of repeat
advertising is the very best indication that the LangaList works.

4) How large is the
list? The
newsletter and
web site advertising info pages
will tell you the guaranteed minimum subscriber count for the current month; the
figures are updated every month. But because the list is growing fast, the
actual, per-issue numbers are almost always higher than the
start-of-the-month numbers: It's routine to get a ton of extra "eyeballs" for
free with each issue!
NOTE: The LangaList subscriber base is 100% opt-in; no names
have ever been added through purchased lists, newsgroup trolling, etc. Every
subscriber has specifically asked to join the list. Each issue also offers three
different ways to unsubscribe; no reader is kept on the list against their
wishes. In other words, every reader is active, current and interested!
Plus, the newsletter subscriber list is kept extraordinarily
clean: Delivery rates often exceed 99%! That means you get the email volume
you pay for! (See this page for more
specifics.)

5) Who are the readers? The
readership closely follows the demographics of the places where Fred's
widely-read columns run (Fred has written long-running bylined columns for
WinMag, Byte, InformationWeek, PortableLIfe and others): The readership includes
mainstream computer users (similar to the WINDOWS Magazine demographic); IT
Managers and professionals (similar to the InformationWeek Online and Portable
Life demographics); mobile/handheld users (similar to the Portable Life
demographic); and high-end/advanced computer professionals (similar to the BYTE
Online demographic).
In all, about 2/3rd of the readership uses their computers as
part of their profession; in fact, about 1/3 of the readership carries formal
"IT" or "IS" type job titles.

6) But wait---Who the heck is Fred Langa?
I’m a freelance computer/web author, editor, analyst and consultant. My work
currently reaches a total of well over 2 million readers every month, through
these sites and publications: See List.

7) What’s the
newsletter format? The LangaList has two components:
an email (plain text) version and an online HTML version that is posted on this
website. (The email newsletter is sent as plain ASCII text for maximum
compatibility with all mail readers.) The web site also contains archived issues
and ancillary pages---which generate a significant amount of traffic in their
own right.

*CPM =
"cost per thousand;" the cost of reaching 1,000 readers. It's a
way to normalize the price differences between large and small media.
Some very small newsletters have very low ad rates, but reach
tiny audiences--- a high CPM. TV and radio have higher rates, but reach vast
audiences a low CPM. Etc.
Knowing the CPM lets you judge the efficiency, or "bang for
the buck" of your ad dollar. The LOWER the CPM, the BETTER the deal for you.
Ideally, you want to advertise where the cost is reasonable AND the CPM is low. |
