Clean9x.Bat

CLEAN9x.BAT

Here's the newest and most powerful batch file
in this popular hard-drive-cleanup series.

This batch file extends and refines the functions of the original CleanAll.Bat. Like its predecessors, it can aggressively scrub your hard drive clean of many junk files, freeing up (typically) anywhere from tens to thousands of megabytes of otherwise-wasted disk space by: It cleans up all Temp files, compacts your Registry and Cookies Index, completely empties the Temporary Internet File (TIF) area, and compacts your Icon Cache (by deletion/re-creation).

But this new version now more-reliably handles circumstances where the Icon cache may not have been cleaned correctly before; and also can automatically run either Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor at the end of the cleanup process to ensure the health of your hard drives!

This file is specifically for Windows9x.

For WinME and NT/2K/XP, see this.

This file is a continuation of the detailed series of articles on system maintenance in the LangaList newsletters and on the WinMag.Com site; those articles comprise the documentation and fully describe the purpose, use of, and precautions about this file. The articles are found here, here, here, here and here. DOS environment variables in particular are discussed here. If you have any trouble, please especially see this and this.

As the series progresses, these files will continue to be enhanced, improved, and extended. Read the LangaList Newsletter for details and to be sure you get the next version as soon as it becomes available!

(The original files have been run successfully on tens of thousands of systems. But please note the cautions here; it is your responsibility to follow all instructions and to ensure that these files are OK to run on your particular system and setup. To that end, the above documentation links contain everything you need to know about the files.)

Two Ways To DownLoad:
All-In-One Zip File Or Separate Files

All-In-One Zip File:
Public Download Area: Click

(In some browsers, you may need to right-click on the above link and select
'save link as...')

Private Download Area
(Plus! edition subscribers only): Click

Once downloaded, use your favorite UnZip tool
(such as WinZip) to extract the files. The ReadMe.TXT file contains further instructions.

Separate Files:

STEP ONE:
Read the above and then
Download Clean9x.Bat
and save it to your C:\ directory
(In some browsers, you may need to right-click on the above link and select
'save link as...')

STEP TWO:
Download Clean9x.PIF
and also save it to your C:\ directory

(In some browsers, you may need to right-click on the above link and select
'save link as...')

STEP THREE:
Use NotePad (or a similar text editor) to open and read the contents of C:\Clean9x.Bat to ensure the commands and structure are OK to run on your particular setup. If desired, edit the commands at the end of the batch file to run your choice of Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor.

STEP FOUR:
If the file is OK to run on your system, double-click on C:\Clean9x.Bat and enjoy your new-found disk space!

Very Cool Extras:
Integrate Clean9x.Bat
into your Recycle Bin menu!

1) Click to download this Registry Patch Installer.
(In some browsers, you may need to right-click on the above link and select
'save link as...')

2) Now double click on the just-downloaded Registry Patch file, select "Yes" when prompted, and Clean9x will now become an option on your Recycle Bin menu. That's all it takes!

To see the effect, right-click on your Recycle Bin. Above the "Empty Recycle Bin" item you'll now see a new item called "Langa.Com Clean9x."

If you've downloaded the Batch file and PIF as instructed in #1, when you click on the Langa.Com Clean9x menu item, Clean9x.Bat will run, properly exiting to DOS first, and restarting Windows automatically after.

Now your heavy-duty disk cleanup chores are conveniently in one place!

To REMOVE Clean9x.Bat from your Recycle Bin Menu:

1) Click to download this Registry Patch Remover.
(In some browsers, you may need to right-click on the above link and select
'save link as...')
